Video footage of a plainclothes police officer ending a hostage situation in Guangzhou, China. According to AOL News:
Some are disturbed that the cop shot the hostage-taker four times, killing him, even though he appeared to have been taken out of action by the first shot and was armed only with a pair of scissors.
But others are celebrating her as a hero.
The incident highlights the ambivalence in China toward widespread, Dirty Harry-style police methods that, while at times effectively ruthless against wrongdoers, often show scant concern for human rights and sometimes compound the bloodshed.
It looks like Americans aren’t the only ones who like to Monday morning quarterback. Mighty fine shooting by the female officer, if you ask me. I’m not sure why a sniper didn’t take out the suspect. But hey, different country, different tactics.

I call her a hero. Sure, he only had a pair of scissors but those sicissors were a very real terror for his hostage. Those scissors could have ended her life. Amazing display of bravery by the policewoman.

It was reported that the suspect stabbed his victim numerous times with those scissors. He deserved every bullet!

Dear Officer Butler,
The “some” discussing sound like a small minority. I suspect most of the ‘questioners” are media-watchers in the international community such as Amnesty International. I like AI for some of their work and wish they’d leave other parts of their ‘purview’ alone.
As for the laughing, does anybody think about adrenaline any more? That plainclothes detective did the good and lived after a huge risk. She deserves to laugh b/c she lived and succeeded. That laugh isn’t celebrating killing–it’s celebrating taking an enormous risk and making it. What a stress.
And the article, relating this to capital punishment rates in China is a logical fallacy. The two situations are not related by the decision-making process that has/has not a deliberative time frame.

Indeed. The laughter, to me, seemed like nervous laughter.

..I think that four shots is a little bit too..much!
In my oppinion it seems that the woman who pulled has a reaction after rather unhealthy, after she taking a human life.
No, she is not un hero, becouse for all people who engage in such jobs – they are heroes from start, from biggining. This is their job!
…But, excuse me – if she were a normal persona like me, or the mother of that girl..maybe she could be uncontrolled… becouse after the danger was remuved – she had to give him in the care of Chinese laws and let him to make prison with the afferent years ..(depending on severity of crime he deserve)..
She executed him as if had woked for mafia or something..sorry about that – but It seemed to me unqualified for the job, enough unprepared for such cases ..
Dy,
(sorry for my bad english..)

Shooting a suspect four times is not necessarily unreasonable. I don’t know how the Chinese are trained, but here in the US, most police agencies train officers to “shoot to stop” meaning that you shoot until the threat has stopped. Unlike the movies, people usually don’t drop to the ground after one shot.

PS_.. or maybe her reaction was that precisely because SHE was scared. that’s it!
Was scared and did not need to engage in a negotiating position, she had to let others who have “balls”..not like her. Yes, another woman with “balls” ( truly brave).

Dear Dyeve,
Your English conveys your meaning so much better than my Romanian (pointing and stuttering, that’s what I would do)! Have a great day! I hope to see you again around the ‘net.

We learn something from this incident. The man who had cruel mindset, he wanted to kill the lady.
The plain cloth policewoman had to save the lady from the danger and shot him down.
The man died because of his anger. very sad scene.
We all need to have health mindset to prevent misfortune.

Whatever works best, is what gets done…
(threat eliminated – situation under control)
Kudos to this policewoman.
Stay safe out there.

Doesn’t matter how many times she shot him. He deserved it. Consequences.
